Too much bike?!
I’ve been watching El Zappoman’s progress toward clocking up 5,000 bike miles this year. He’s nearly made it, but it looks as though the weather will pip him to the post in the end. Cold, icy weather and cycling don’t mix too well.
And I have to sympathise - it’s been a while since I had a real fall from my bike (other than low-speed tumbles caused by outright stupidity), but on Christmas Eve, I did find the cornering limits of my sturdy commuting bike on the wet roundabout outside Whitley Bay’s Park Hotel. The momentary slide of the rear wheel was my own fault - caused by too much speed. In my own defence, I was keeping the speed up to make sure I kept out of the way of the vehicle that was right on my tail . . . and it was only when I got back on the straight and narrow that I realised it was a police car! Lucky not to get pulled over and given a stiff talking to, but luckier still not to have slid under it in the first place.
The thing is that cycling’s rather addictive - even when things do go wrong occasionally.
Still, you can take things too far, as shown on this award-winning video I found on Bike for All. This does feature some adult content, so be warned before you play the film!

Ahhh! McCracken! That’s a rookie move saying I can’t do something! That will make me doubly committed to doing it! I Only have 105 miles to go and 3 more days! I can make it!
Love the video though, and I love the fact that you live near someplace called “Smuggler’s Cave”!
Hee hee hee . . . goad, goad!
[...] Then I discovered this morning that Karl McCracken thought I’d let the weather get the best of me! How dare he!!! I already planned to ride to work this morning. But after reading his blog, I had to put the hammer down Since it was my last day on the job, I really only had to turn in my ID badge and say goodbye, so I waited till the sun came out and warmed up the road (melted any ice) and then I took it real slow, and took a couple long-cuts to add some miles to the ride. All in all I did 61.4 miles today. So that leaves me at 4957 miles for the year… so I can easily accomplish this goal with a solo ride tomorrow, and a family ride to cap off the year on Sunday! Hoorah! [...]
