Defeated by the wind.

I had 39 miles to do today if I was to set off on the right foot for my 3,000 miles in 2007 target. I’d planned this to be easy - meeting up with a friend in Newcastle for a 20 mile circuit, plus the ten miles each way into and out of town.

But the wind’s got the better of me (so far today, at least). I was crouched next to my bike releasing the brakes so that I could take the front wheel off to repair yesterday’s puncture (the Slime only slowed the leak enough to get me home - still needed fixing) when a gust actually blew me over!

According to the weather forecast, it’s only blowing 22mph, but I’m sure it’s a lot blowier than that here! (btw - forecast for Wed & Thur is 35 mph. I’m driving on both days.)

Am I bothered? Yes, a bit - I’ve set out to follow a consistent mileage throughout the year, and I’ve failed at the first hurdle.

Does it really matter? No, not a bit. As El ZappoMan has pointed out, summer miles are a lot easier than winter ones. And, my target of 125 miles per fortnight was only set five days ago. So I’m sure that even in the winter, given a 14 day fortnight rather than a 5 day one, this won’t be a regular Bart Simpson under-achieving-and-proud-of-it problem.

I am targeting 4,000 miles this year - and yes that is partially inspired by my friend the zappoman. For me it breaks down to 80 miles a week. I just hit 200 miles yesterday, but I’ve had to do it all on an exercise bike because of the weather here in Seattle.

I can’t wait until the weather turns so I can head outdoors.

    Hi Phil -
Indoor bike miles count for more (as do treadmill miles), because of the huge boredom factor ;-)
    Keep it up!
