Help - I’m Becomming OBSESSED With The Wind
It must be this stupid hope of emulating a slice of El Zappoman’s 5,000 mile Odyssey. Last year I’d go out riding on nice days, when the wind didn’t blow. Because I was just doing it for fun. But now I’ve got this target, and I have to stay on target - no matter what the weather.
Today was a great day for cycling - bright and crisp, and this morning not too much of a breeze. But on the way home, an hour or so after sunset . . . it just got windier . . . and WINDIER . . . and W I N D I E R. Until as I turned onto the sea front road for the last mile and a half I was head to head with one of those northerly “I’m going to freeze your face off and blow it a hundred miles down the road behind you” gales.
Now obviously, this is England. We don’t get much real weather here (an inch and a half of snow brings travel chaos. And to think we used to have an Empire that spanned the globe . . . ) , so in absolute terms, I’m sure that I may be exagerating.
According to AccuWeather, it was only blowing at 10 mph. So how come when I took the dog for a walk when I got home, I could barely walk into the wind?
Anyway. I am getting obsessed, so I’m adding a new category to my blog - cycling/wind. Maybe it’s just for me, and maybe it’ll scare people off. But I don’t care. It’s me, and the wind, and I WILL overcome . . .
*My absolute favourite was of course Big Vern - “Dahn’t worry Ern’, I’m wearing a dynamite waistcoat, so no b***ard copper’s taking me alive”
