Cold Weather at Last! / Detective at Large. . .

Look! Snow on my bike!It snowed here last night! I felt six years old again this morning when I set off at 06:10 for the pool. Unfortunately, the snowy conditions meant that I took things a lot slower (road rash is just so unflattering) than I’d have otherwise done - by the time I got there, I decided that I wouldn’t have time for a decent swim, if I was to make it to today’s client in time for the daily team briefing I’ve got started.

So I set off again, aiming to get to the office early, and maybe finish the report I’ve been working on. I got there at 07:10, to find that I was a) first to arrive b) an external consultant, and hence not a key-holder. Doh!

So I thought it’d be nice to go for a ride around the local area. Once I got behind the offices though, I noticed some strange tracks in the otherwise virgin snow - as if someone had been dragging something heavy away from the building. So I thought . . . what the heck, why not follow and see where they lead?…..

So a mile and a half later, I found myself in one of the rougher areas of town, cycling past a house with two blerks (that’s Geordie for blokes) discussing their morning’s work. Naturally, I’m a coward, so I carried on past, got to the end of the road, and then headed back, noting down the house number and street name.

By the time I got back to the office, the staff had started arriving, and it became apparent that  there had been a burglary (!). So in the interest of ‘helping the police with their enquiries’, I went and photographed the footprints in the snow before they melted.

When the police came to the client’s offices, they were quite surprised at the information we could give them.  Apparantly there’s a house in Newcastle which’ll be getting an early morning visit some time in the very near future from the boys in blue!

My daughter says that I should get a reward . . . but then she’s five, and I’m her father, so everything I do is currently filed under ‘hero’ in her mind. I’m sure all that’ll change in, oh, about eight years though.

Forget about catching bad guys. You’re my hero because you had the guts to go cycling in the snow.

I have a mountain bike, a touring bike, and a road bike - and I’m not sure I would even attempt to cycle in the snow on my mountain bike let alone one of the other ones.
