Brick in France

. . . or as the locals might say, “La brique en France”.
Today’s our last day here, and I wanted to ‘go out with a bang’. So I set out for a brick at Olympic distance - 25 mile bike and 10k run. For the bike, I extended the route from earlier in the [...]

Learn to Swim - NOW!

Yesterday, I started to write the previous post about cycling cornering technique (and the wind in France) after a picnic at on the river bank at the junction of the Canal du Midi and the Herault river at Agde. But I’m supposed to be on holiday, and so I gave in to pressure from Daughter [...]

Eliza Dolittle says . . .

“The rain in Spain falls mainly on the plain . . .
. . . but the wind in France blows mostly in yer face!”
I went for a ride out on Sunday up into the edge of the hills to the North on Gabian & Roujan - a short “mad dogs & Englishmen” trip out at [...]

There’s a Race THIS Weekend!

We’ve come to Carcassonne to be tourists for the day around the restored medieval city & castle.
And guess what? This weekend is the Carcassonne Triathlon! Saturday is a super-sprint, while there’s an Olympic & ½IM on Sunday.
Next year, I’ll be here for the race.

“By The Numbers, People”: Wildlife, Running

This morning I set out to do a really thrilling & exciting training session - NOT! Maybe I’m just enjoying cycling & swimming too much, but just now running is kinda a chore. Still, at least this morning I was on a MISSION:
1. Measure my lactate threshold as per Bill’s instructions.
2. Measure my sweat rate [...]

Crazy For The Heat

Yesterday was warmer than the day before; 36C in the sun & 29C in the shade. Lovely weather for cycling, I thought.
So in the late afternoon, I set off for Pézenas - a short 16 mile round trip, which apart from the climb up & over Cassan & Roujan seems pretty much flat . . [...]

Heart Rate: Should I Be Worried?

On yesterday evening’s run, I was wearing my cheep & cheerful HRM. And I’m worried about what it was telling me.
My calculated HRmax is either 183 (220- age) or 184 (the formula that also uses resting HR). For much of the run, I was in the high 150s, or about 80%. But every time I [...]

Curse This Heat!

So on Sunday we drove down through France. The 07:00 ferry meant an 04:45 start, and then it was 700 miles of mainly motorway driving. Some really bad weather in the plains before the Massifs Centrale (rain like you wouldn’t believe), left us all really tired by the time we arrived in Gabian.
After last week [...]

Away to France (again)

So this evening, we’re packing up the car and heading down to my parents’ in Kent, before catching the Sunday morning Ferry & then driving the length of France to The In-Laws.
A couple of diferences with this trip though . . . .
o The Huge Dalmatian’s pet passport is now active, so he’s coming [...]
