Saturday Morning Run
Got up late as I forgot to set the alarm. Maybe this was a Freudian slip though, as I wasn’t really in the mood for the planned long bike ride! So I went out for a run in the rain instead.
Workout:
- Type: Run
- Date: 06/23/2007
- Total Time: 00:47:53.00
- Distance: 7 miles
- Average Pace: 6:50.49/mile

6:50 pace! Right on!
Why do you think I’m faster than you? I think you’d mop the floor with me.
Yeah - felt really good too. I think the damp cool weather just suited me.
You are faster - I have a typical ‘runner’ physique (at school, ’skinny’ would have been more accurate), and running something I’ve always done, but never than much beyond 10k (three half marathons in 15 years don’t really count, do they?), and only in semi-regular races in the last few years. My problem is that I run out of gas beyond about 9 miles.
So here’s where you get the advantage . . . I’m still learning freestyle. Sure, I can now swim a mile, but it’s slow and deliberate, and to put on the kind of pace I’d really like is going to take a lot of work. On the bike, I really struggle to get an average above 19mph - probably a factor of my ‘runners’ shape, and I need to get some time in the gym doing strength training to increase the grunt that I can push out. Oh, and being only 3′6″ tall, (or so I hear), you have a frontal area advantage that I’ll never overcome without a recumbent. And finally when it comes to the run, I’m still learning all about long distance - not just building the strength & stamina, but stuff like fuelling & hydration.
Bottom line: I’m learning all about real endurance multisport. Right now, you do have the advantage, but give me a couple years and maybe I’ll be in the game. Perhaps we should meet up for an event in 2010 for a proper comparison? Lake Placid’s about half way between Seattle & the UK. . .
