Am I Withnail or Marwood?
It’s that point in the season when I feel I’m on a treadmill, not wanting to go on, and desperate not to get off . . .
“All right, this is the plan. We’ll get in there and get wrecked. Then we’ll eat a pork pie. Then we’ll go home, and drop a couple of Surmontil 50’s each. That means we’ll miss out Monday, but come up smiling on Tuesday”
And my body clock’s starting to get wierd . . .
“Even a stopped clock tells the right time twice a day”
These are the summer months, where I’m gaining an advantage on my year’s target of 3,000 bike miles. The problem is that it’s also the time of year when I’ve changed my cycling pattern - instead of doing lots of short-ish rides in a week, I’m doing one or two short ones (which are now up to 30 miles), and then a long one at the weekend.
The reason for this is that it creates space for me to be more disciplined about the rest of my training, and actually get out running.
All this is grinding me down a bit just now though. Not physically (though I am finding that I need more sleep), but mentally. Like this weekend, where the first Withnail quote is most appropriate:
I’m going to be a big kid, and pick up my copy of Harry Potter tomorrow morning, and on past form, read it over the weekend. And that’s probably all I’ll do this weekend. In order to do this, I have to drop something fairly heavy on my training schedule so that I can miss out Saturday and Sunday, and come up smiling on Monday.
So my plan is to get up at Early O’Clock tomorrow and ride out to Consett (which is rumoured to be the town that was the inspiration for the film Deliverance. But that’s just a rumour), which’ll be around a 55 mile round trip. On the way back, I can stop off at borders, buy the book, and be back in time for a second breakfast with the family, before diving into the book.
Sounds like a simple plan, but right now I’m lacking in enthusiasm for it. Maybe it’s the weather - this has been a rubbish summer. Or maybe it’s that I always seem to loose my mojo a bit in the summer. Or maybe I just need a week off.
I don’t want to do that last one though! I’ve three races in the next seven weeks - two involving the continuing saga of my struggle for equality with Tall Friend, and my first open water swim. But right now, I am so looking forward to mid September!
Oh, and speaking of swimming, I did a couple of 400m sets while Daughter was having her lesson today. I clocked the first one at 9:30, and the second at 9:15. Which was definitely something to bring a smile to my face.
