So the plan today was to get up early and put in a 50 mile ride before the rest of the family were even up and about. Funny how things have a habit of not working out as intended - Daughter was ill last night, and we spent the night rather sleeplessly looking after her. She ended up sleeping rather fitfully being cuddled by her Mummy in our bed, and I slept a little in hers.
Daughter was still rather poorly today, and any plans we had involving all three of us were effectively put on ice. But it shows what a loving Wife I have - she sent me out for my ride anyway in the afternoon.
I wanted to get in 50 miles so as to keep my annual mileage target . . . uh . . . on target. So my plan was to go through Newcastle, and out on the Scotswood road as far as the tank factory, and then back along the south side of the river, up past Gateshead athletics stadium, before heading in the direction of Sunderland, turning north at Nissan and making for Hebburn. There, I could do a circuit of the Hebburn Triathlon’s cycle circuit, to fix the mile marks in my head, and decide where I should take my drinks next Sunday. Then home, via the Tyne Foot Tunnel.
The wind wasn’t as strong as yesterday, but even so, it was fairly heavy going until I got to the Scotswood bridge at the 15 mile mark. My average was only 16.4mph, with cadence in the low 90’s. After changing direction, I didn’t exactly have the wind to my back, but at least it was no-longer right in my face.
In the section before Nissan, I passed through a brief, but freezing shower (and this is supposed to be July), but other than that, got to Hebburn without any incidents. Then I did the circuit of the Hebburn Triathlon’s cycle route, at, given that I’d already covered 30 miles, near enough race pace - 19.4 mph, and staying off the aero bars. Which was quite pleasing .
But by the time I’d finished this, I’d also finished all the fluids I’d brought with me. And Hebburn swimming pool had just that minute closed, so I couldn’t just pop in there to top up my bottles. So I had to do the last 12 miles without anything more to drink - not far, but far enough, that far into this ride.
When I finally got home, I more or less put this right - 1/2 a litre of Zym (a bit like Nuun, I guess?), a post-workout shake (1 small banana, 1/4 litre semi-skimmed milk, ~45 grammes whey protein powder, 1 teaspoon peanut butter, 1 teaspoon honey) . . . then a little later some dried apricots, and now a pint of Robinson’s Lemon Barley Water (makes me feel five years old - my grandmother always had it when we went to visit!). But I also might just have a beer now - From Russia With Love’s about to start on TV!
