Warwick Triathlon - Results
Well the results are out - provisional results anyway.
But it makes no difference - Tall Friend beat me, by 84 seconds. The splits tell an interesting story:
- Swim (& T1): Karl - 11:07; Tall Friend - 9:59
I can account for all of this with being involved in the swimming pool traffic jam. Then again, there’s no saying that Tall Friend didn’t get caught in the gridlock. - Bike (& T2): Karl - 38:01; Tall Friend - 37:49
Now I had a great ride, but Tall Friend was obviously on a complete flyer - either that or he’d found a shortcut! No. He just rode faster - by 12 seconds over 12 miles. What fun it would have been if we’d both come out of T1 together! - Run: Karl - 20:49; Tall Friend - 20:44
Oh, come on now. Five seconds over 5k. So close again!
So I can rationalise the swim, but the other two tell the true story. I was beaten fair and square in every event. But being so close means that there’s still a race to be run (and cycled and swum). The whole point of racing against friends is to have the competition balanced on a knife-edge, so neither has an absolute advantage. Because its between friends, I can be happy no matter who wins, satisfied that it’s down to the effort and training.
[Grrrrrrrrrrrr!]

You two are tough competitors! I am getting ready to do the Kirkland Triathlon on Sunday. I’ve been recovering from a cold and I hurt my foot. Luckily it’s healing quickly.
I have a friend who has been beating me on the bike, so I can relate. We’ll see how it goes Sunday!
They say the race is not won or lost in the swim, but apparently in this case….that’s not true. ;_)
It’s a shame you guys did not exit T1 at the same time. I suspect you guys would have been dueling the whole time, resulting in faster overalls for both of you.
Hmmm, I’ve got a long way to go before my competition with Brad is balanced on a knife-edge. It’s a lot of fun to have the competition so close though, I’m sure.
Karl, congrats on a great race and congrats on finishing an ambitious triathlon year!
Now whens that sub 40 min 10k? Wubba… that’s fast!
