It’s Hard To Be Good
This morning was just beautiful when I was out running with Shana - clear blue sky, sun just over the horizon, the tide high & sea flat.
In fact, the sea looked rather too good. Too tempting. As we ran past the harbour, I could see that the recent calm weather had really done wonders for the clarity of the water, and you could see all the way to the bottom even quite a way out.
It was so tempting to slip my wetsuit on and go for a swim after the run. An easy half mile or so would be, well, easy! But then I remembered that I’m supposed to be resting my shoulder properly - taking a whole month off from any real swimming. And I knew that even if I set off easy, the pace would pick up - especially if I headed off out of the harbour and around the fishing boats moored about 100 yards out. I could see that the tide was already starting to go out, and I’d end up swimming back in against the current.
Oh, it’s hard being disciplined sometimes!

I feel for ya’ man. You see that perfect opportunity to do something you absolutely love & it eats you up to let it get away, even when you know its the best thing for you. So many of us over this summer have repeated a theme of sadness and regret over backing off in order to heal. Good for you for listening to your body and giving it what it needs. (Hey, any chance you would get any satisfaction from putting on the wetsuit & floating about in the beautiful water? Aka no real swimming? Sometimes I find that incredibly meditative, but then again I’m not a swimmer, so I’m not burdened with the frustration you would probably encounter.)
It’s a good thing you are done with your triathlons. You’ll have time to recover and work on your running, right?
