Short Ride with a Half-Hearted Assassination Attempt
So here’s my cycling mileage plan for this week:
- 30 yesterday
- 15 today
- 15 tomorrow morning
- 30 tomorrow afternoon
- 15 in the Sunday morning spin class
If I manage all of those, then I’ll be less than 500 miles from my goal mileage. I’m finding that as I get closer to the target, I’m accelerating my mileage - it’s almost as if hitting the goal is spurring me on / I’m terrified of getting complacent & failing in the end.
Today’s ride was just beautiful autumn weather. A little cold (could have done with full gloves for the first 30 minutes), but a sky as blue and clear as anyone could have wished for. A light wind from the West made for a slightly slow outbound leg, to Byker . . . that was more than compensated for on the way back.
Three miles from home, a car made a half hearted effort to pull out on me. Not a serious attempt on my life, but just enough to get in the way of my rhythm on a short hill.
And the driver? Oh, she had a perfect excuse for not focusing 100% on her driving: She had a mobile phone clamped to the side of her face.
Cycling, I see lots of drivers on the phone. Often they’re driving isn’t what I’m sure if could be if they weren’t trying to concentrate on doing two things at once. I’ve never seen any seriously bad driving - just casual slip-ups. But of course, it only takes one of those to smear someone all over the road, or put your car in front of something bigger and heavier than you are.
Part of me wants to stop when I see people driving & on the phone, whip out my camera & photograph them & their car number plates to create a hall of shame. But I’m not entirely sure that antagonising someone inside a ton of armour plate is the best way for me to stay safe.
