Cold Hands & Feet

Winter is definitely here now.

I had a meeting with a new prospective client in Newcastle yesterday. Generally people are OK about a business consultant who cycles, but some still expect someone wearing a suit & carrying a briefcase - though they seem to be in the minority now. I spoke to my prospect on the phone last Friday, and found out that she wasn’t in this group, and that she’d got somewhere secure to leave a bike & for me to change. So I cycled in.

It was great cycling weather - a bit of a breeze from the west, but bright and sunny. In fact it was pretty much perfect. The only problem was that I had the wrong gloves on - a fairly skimpy pair of Altura full-finger ones. These are pretty good gloves, but not up to the job that was needed yesterday, with the temperature only just above freezing.

Within a couple of miles my Raynaud’s disease had kicked in, leaving all my fingertips numb. And actually, so were my toes. Fortunately I was working hard enough to warm up within fifteen minutes or so. But it might be time to dig out my ever-so-warm skiing mittens. And a pair of over-boots are starting to look attractive. Brrrrr!

hmmm…I wonder if I have Raynaud’s. When my fingertips have turned greenish white and numb in the cold, I assumed it was just normal from the cold. Guess I need to watch it more carefully. Hey, btw…I have noticed a huge decrease in the occurance of this issue now that I do a lot more yoga. I wonder if that has opened up the joints and reduced blood constriction opportunities. More reading necessary to determine (and maybe a question to my regular doc!).

Stay warm…oh and have you tried using “hotties” in your gloves or shoes? They make a world of difference for me!

See, now this is why I live in the tropics. I always thought that whole “cold weather” thing was a really bad invention. lol

    Sean - one word: “Skiing!”

Gardenmentor - That’s what I put in my ski mittens when it gets really cold - they have special pouches on the back of the finger area for taking those natty chemical heat packs you can get. hmmmmmmm soooo warm!
