Sheldon Brown

Sheldon BrownBummer. I was so wrapped up with my inability to do the two-wheeled basics over the last 36 hours that I’ve ony just picked up on the fact that Sheldon Brown (the world’s first bike über-mechanic of the internet age) died at the weekend. If you’ve never read Sheldon’s pages, go there now - some scary beards & headgear, and web page design from way back when disguise one of the greatest resources of bike maintenance lore you’re ever likely to read.

Nice to have perused your encyclopedia Sheldon - we’ll miss you.

I had a client tell this to me today. I personally am not highly aware of all of his work, but my client was incredibly awed by his stuff. I wish I had the opportunity to talk old time bikes with him..

    Sadness.

I read his website several years ago when I was commuting regularly. I always liked his writing, and he changed my mind on things like internal hubs. Based on his thinking, I still think that most commuting bikes in Seattle should be using an internal hub for the placement of their gears (except for the fixie crowd). Splash is bad!

Here’s to more people stepping up to take his place!
