Running: Resistance Training
I remember when I was a student at Loughborough (famous for sports and engineering geeks - I was in the latter group, though Steve Backley was in my Hall in the year above me), looking out at the field behind my room, and watching a guy doing sprints. He had a rope round his waist, and on the end of it was a car tyre that he was dragging along behind him.
I consider that kind of thing to be fairly hardcore.
And today, I inadvertently tried the same thing. Not with an old car tyre, but with this:
I mean the one on the left. For some reason he was so not in the mood to run at all today though. It was like running with a deranged sack of potatoes - he just wanted to amble along, taking time to sniff the roses (or the other stuff that dogs like to sniff), take every opportunity to follow the path less traveled (like, the turnings off the path we were on - thankfully he was on a bungee lead, or he’d have ended up garrotted, and I’d have dislocated a shoulder), and generally not make it a good run.
It’s still fairly windy here today, so we set off North along the prom, into the wind. We only got to the Spanish City, before I’d had enough, and it was time to turn back. And then at just under half a mile from home, I’d had enough, so we walked the rest of the way.
So now I’ll have to go for another run this evening - this week’s training hours have got to be filled and spent wisely, one way or another. Grrrr!
