When Harry Met Sally

Katz Deli - When Harry Met SallyShana and I went for an easy run this morning - down to Tynemouth and back. I’d wanted to go out along the North pier of the Tyne, but the gate wasn’t yet open, so we just cut the run short a little.

The first stretch of the return journey is to run up the bank next to Tynemouth Priory - the 200m or so slope that I use for hill repeats (and injuring my right heel - Doh!). I do it in 40 seconds for each of ten reps, so I figured that Shana should be comfortable doing it in 60 . . . so off we went, with me trying to set a 60 second pace.

I could tell that Shana was enjoying it - after about a hundred metres, she started making noises like Meg Ryan in that restaurant scene from When Harry Met Sally. Within 50 metres of the top, she was letting out the occasional moan of, “Ooooh God!” - to the extent that a runner coming in the other direction was obviously embarrassed - he plainly just didn’t know where to look.

I was actually struggling to keep up - both because it was so hard struggling not to laugh, and because  Shana was  setting a pretty good pace - in fact she managed to get up that hill in just 48 seconds. Of course, we had to rest a little at the top, while Shana got control of her laughter after I told her what I’d been finding so funny.

See? Whoever said that running wasn’t fun?
