Cleveland Steelman: T1

OK, so as I got out of the water, they announced my name, and that I’d brought shame on the NE31 Triathlon Club by being last out of the water. OK - so no one mentioned shame, but that’s how I felt. Our coach, Peter was there to see how his (daughter? and) protegees did, and I was LAST - despite all the hard work he’s put in trying to make me a faster swimmer.

Oh, CRAP. I mean it. I’ve felt low in the past, but this was really the pits.

But then I saw who else was there - Wife and Daughter and VonSmallhaussen. All cheering and whooping and smiling (relieved that I hadn’t actually drowned? Whatever - I’ll take it where I can get it!).

And suddenly the world didn’t seem to bad.

There was someone else still in transition. I took my time, and did what I’d planned. Got the wetsuit off, helmet, track mitts, socks and shoes on. Took a big 200ml drink of the Zym I’d put aside just for transition. Took a look at the sky and decided that I really didn’t need the shades.

And got out to the bike mount line and on my bike and out for the next stage . . . .

There’s no shaming in reaching T1 under your own power and before the cut-off! That is a victory in and of itself!
