100 Push-Up Challenge

Charles Atlas - also responsible for Brad Major's demise.Meh! I need a new challenge.  Couple of weeks back, I saw that someone hereabouts had posted about a 100 push-ups challenge. Being as I’m on the thin and weedy side of things above the waist, rather like the ‘before’ picture in the Charles Atlas adverts, I’ve never been able to do push ups (or as we call them here, press-ups).

So as I can’t yet do it, being able to do a hundred would be kinda cool. In the sense of the Rocky Horror Show’s line about why Rocky had that name in the first place - it’s because of all the rocks in his head.

So I’ve just done my initial test (excuse any typing errors - my arms are shaking), which identifies what level of programme I’m on. If I’d realised that the better I did in my initial test, the harder the programme would be, maybe I wouldn’t have tried quite so hard though . . .

I have to do sets of push-ups three times a week for six weeks. I wonder if that’ll be enough to get me from my initial low starting point and all the way to a hundred, or will I need to do two, or three, or four sets of six weeks?

up it to 5x/week, and approach the pushup workouts as you would running workouts . . . on some days so lots of smaller sets with little rest (like track workouts) and on other days do bigger sets with lots of rest (like LSD runs). other days shock your body by doing bigger sets with little rest (like 1.5-mi repeats). and get creative.

in the end, pushups are all mental. i went from nothing to everything in a month back when i started . . . if you’re determined and dedicated, you shouldn’t need more than 6 weeks. remember to practice good form - quick pushups that take your arms through about 30 degrees of movement don’t help your muscles and they look silly, as opposed to doing real men’s pushups that go through all 90 degrees of movement and are nice and slow.

    No worries Karl.

I’m also considering increasing the number of workouts to 4 or 5 per week. Will see. If I struggle with week 3, I’ll try a different approach.

    Good luck with the challenge!!
