Commuting & Errands
I went to visit a prospective new client on the Team Valley on Friday. While there, the conversation got around to cycling (funny how that happens), even though I’d taken a change of clothes, and was looking almost sharp. The woman I was talking to lives within a few miles of me, and said that she wanted to ride to work, but couldn’t figure out a suitable route. Well, just so you know, here’s the route I took on Friday (plotted with Veloroutes new auto road-tracing thing - a couple of oddities), and here’s an alternative one, avoiding most hills (again, some oddities - especially along the new Gateshead Quayside route, where Veloroutes obviously doesn’t know that the road goes right through now)
Actually, it’s a good job that I did take a change of clothes - there’d been a huge thunder storm in the night (I was woken up by the rain at 3:30, and that was before the lightning started), and even when I got up at 6:30 it was still raining pretty hard. On the assumption that this sort of weather would overwhelm my waterproofs, I’d opted to wear my one-piece duathlon suit, with just the waterproofs on top. I figured that thin, skintight Lycra wouldn’t offer much protection, but it’d also allow me to sweat freely through it.
Then as I left home, the rain stopped, and within half an hour it was a beautiful day . . . you just can’t depend on the weather these days!
