Hebburn Triathlon 2008: Swim - Karma catches me up
Robbie and I had both wangled early starts for the race - I was in at No. 19, setting off at 7:39, and he was No. 23, two minutes behind me. Fat Robbie’s a slightly faster swimmer than me, so I’d reckoned that we’d both be out of the water together.
Not so. Last year my swim time for this race was 8:07, which is a pace that I just know I can’t swim. I’m pretty certain that the marshall at the end of my lane in the pool pulled me out 50m early. Well this year, I think they made up for that mistake, and I swam two lengths extra - making 450m.
So by the time I got to transition, Fat Robbie was already there, and had headed out before I even got a chance to put my shoes on . . . .
Could I catch him on the bike? Find out in the next post: Hebburn Triathlon: Bike Chase-down

I too nearly did 18 lengths but was very alert to counting my own lengths, Guess its easy to loose count when your doing it all moring
Yep - I’ve no idea how they manage to accurately count lengths, though in my experience, the marshalls generally do. I just think I’ve been unlucky at this race two years running.
What I prefer is an arrangement like they have at the Stratford Tri - it’s a 33m pool, and they lane it off into three, double-width lanes. You swim two laps in lane #1, move across to lane #2 and do two laps, and then do the same in lane #3. Easy-peasy to keep track of where you are. Of course, doing that in a 25m pool would cause all sorts of problems . . .
Since I was given two extra lengths at Prudhoe
I always shout my lengths out each turn at the marshalls, 2, 4, 6, 8… etc
Now that’s a really smart idea!
