First Run of ‘09

Anyone seen my fitness? I’m sure I left it round here somewhere. I mean, I’ve turned the place upside down looking for it today, and I just can’t seem to find it anywhere.

Let me think, where did I last have it? Oh yeah, during the Cleveland Steelman in July last year. Since then, I’ve been pretty much grounded from running, with plantar fasciitis in my right heel.

I think that might be better now though.

Maybe it’s time to ease myself back into running, and set some goals for 2009. I mean, I’ve never run a marathon, it’s been years since I ran the Great North Run, and there’s still unfinished business with triathlon. I WANT one of those painful M-Dot tattoos on my ankle, but you’ve got to earn them, and they don’t come cheep.

Hmmmm. More on this later.

Yay… come to the “running” side :)

Gotta keep stretching those legs and rolling those feet, Karl.

The stretching is straightforward. For the rolling, I use both a tennis ball and a golf ball, depending on how much pain I need to put myself through. Another good stretch for it is to stand on the tennis ball and let the foot relax around it. Otherwise, all rolling is done sitting down.

It works wonders, I tell ya!

You average 7:35 after not having run for 6 months?? I’m impressed.

Hey, you do your marathon, and I’ll do my half. Deal?

  5. Karl On Sea on January 4, 2009 at 8:15 pm

    Kim: That’s a deal.

Efranlje: I tend to lose endurance far quicker than speed. Even after a year off running, I can hold 8-minute miles for 3-4 miles . . . and then collapse!

Bill: S’just what I did. No pain at all today, so I’m going to repeat the run, golf-ball and stretching right now.

Kate - I never really left. My absence from running was always more of an à bientôt than an adieu!
