Door Zone - A Real Eye-Opener!
This via Carbon Trace - a video that appeared on the Commute Orlando Blog , that shows in clear terms how far from a parked car is safe for overtaking.
This was a real eye-opener for me, because I think that I generally overtake parked cars somewhere between the first and second position shown, and probably nearer to the first - just three feet out. I think on tomorrow’s ride in to work I’ll watch myself closely, and see how it feels being in the final position shown . . .

Watch for the other door zone too.
Last October I got taken out when a passenger in a car in a line of stop-start traffic to my right took me out. He thought he’d be quicker on foot and just flung open the car door (without warning the driver.) I was watching the door zone of the parked vehicles on my left. I’m back on the bike on the flat, now, but still not back to commuting yet.
That’s 3 metres out from the Kerb. I thought I was being bolshy when I rode that far out. I’ll have to think again.
I’ll need a very fast explanation prepared in German too…
