Cycling Manifesto In Pictures

I really, really like the Superhighway Manifesto of the London Cycling Campaign that I posted about at the weekend. The trouble is, the odds are that the people in overall charge of traffic & transport in your (my) local authority don’t actually ride a bike as an everyday mode of transport. So the fine words of the London Cycling Campaign are just that - words.

What’s needed is something to make the problems of existing provision more obvious, and a clear example of how things perhaps should be done pup up for contrast. As they say at ASDA (part of Walmart now - don’t go there), "Show me what a good job looks like"…

1. Make my journey a pleasant experience and not a daily struggle for space
Not
like this…
… but
like this
2.Give me and other cyclists priority over motor traffic
Not
like this…
… but
like this
3. Include sections free of motor traffic
Not
like this…
… but
like this
4. Stop buses, lorries and cars passing too close and too fast
Not
like this…
… but
like this
5. Keep my path free of parked cars and the danger of opening car doors
Not
like this…
… but
like this
6. Enable me to cycle at the speed I prefer
We’re not all like this… …but neither are we all like this!
7. Don’t force me to cross lanes of fast moving traffic
Not
like this…
… but
like this
8. Do away with hazardous or difficult one-way systems and roundabouts
Not
like this…
… but
like this
9. [Provide bike routes / lanes that] are continuous and don’t stop and start
Not
like this…
… but
like this
10. Allow me to stop at red lights ahead of other traffic and move off first
Not
like this…
… but
like this

…… and a huge thank you to all those people whose Creative Commons photographs & videos are shown above!

  1. Well done! Good collection of pictures. Like the attempt to make it more visual, because like you said it was just words before. We can all dream that it may one day be like this! If Boris wasn’t so busy chasing after young girls!

  2. Oh p.s. you may want to checkout the promo video to the cycle superhighways: http://bit.ly/WGs2q
