This Christmas, What To Get For The Cyclist Who Has Everything?

. . other than a nice new bike, of course. Remember, you can never have too many bikes . . . but these can be a little obvious when wrapped up, and take up a whole bunch of room under the tree.

Unless you get a nice foldie-up Brompton of course:

There are all sorts of other things you could get - clothes, gloves, bags, a wheel-building course, but what about the other stuff - the things that are ideal for Santa to leave in the toe of a stocking?

Things like these from Park Tools . . . .

Yes, that’s a pizza cutter ! They also do . . .

. . . a barbecue tool set . You might think it’s the wrong time of year for a barbecue, but my parents usually have a New Year’s barbecue, which providing there’s no rain is a huge success. Of course, you’d want a drink at such an event . . .

So it’s handy that they also do a bottle opener and a pint glass .

These are all from Park Tools, and sort of in the range of stocking-filler prices. For some people though, it’s all about the bling factor. We’re not going to get into a Shimano Vs Campagnolo debate here (it’s the only thing more likely to attract trolls & flamers than trying to discuss helmets like grown-ups), but there is this offering available from Campagnolo for the cycling wine connoisseur in your life:

Any other ideas of what you’d love Santa to bring you in just four weeks’ time?

  1. Be careful. That “pint” glass only holds an inferior American pint of beer. That’s just 473 ml, not the 568 ml Imperial pint that you’re probably expecting…

If you want a really nice actual tool for Christmas, I’d suggest the Rohloff chain tool. It’s absolutely the best chain tool I’ve ever used. Adjustable for different chain widths, it puts the pins in perfectly, never produces a sticky link, and it rivets the pin into place which makes is very strong.

  2. Of course, one thing I’d forgotten that makes a particularly stylish and useful Christmas present is a wicker basket for your bike! :-)

  3. If I was only allowed to keep just one bike it would be the Brompton. The most versatile machine in the “fleet”

  4. I just received a gift from a friend of mine. It is a new kind of rear light for bicyclists. It is called the FlashBak. ( http://www.flashbakonline.com ) It is so bright! I’m not sure, but I think my new Flashbak is brighter than my old PB Super Flash. I’ll check sometime soon, in a side-by-side test. Either way…I use both of them together. I googled it and found several reliable sources who have reviewed it, and had great things to say. Oh, well. Christmas is coming and the cyclist is getting fat. That’s my suggestion. Merry Christmas.
