One Less Excuse
Last week I was in the pool, chatting to Gary from Tri Northumberland (speaking of which - have you seen that the Ashington Sprint Triathlon is FULL ? If you’re thinking of doing one of the Northumberland triathlons, you’d better sign-up SOON!) about how bloody cold it is out on the bike at the moment.
My Nike Sphere base layer with a jersey over the top just isn’t cutting it any more for me. Maybe I’m getting old, or maybe this winter has a different quality of cold from previous years. Or maybe with that little race in June now only 150 days away, I’m just doing longer rides in the depths of winter.
The solution Gary suggested was to get some proper winter clothes, and specifically a windstopper jacket. Which is what I did - an Altura Reflex jacket - retail price £90 . . . found in the sales at £60 (but not in my size - Grrr!) . . . found new on Ebay for £40. Bargain.
It turned up in the post today (no idea how the postman got it through the letter box), and having missed my swim this morning, I decided that I’d better go for a ride tonight. Just because I needed to stick to my schedule, not because I wanted to try out the new jacket, you understand.
And how was it?
Well, you know about my running tights with the fleecy lining that I want to be buried in when I die? Well, I think we may have completed that particular outfit. In fact, with Wife away visiting Von Smallhaussen in That London, I may even wear it to bed tonight and sleep with the window open . . .

I’m sure she’s really missing that sight!
I totally, totally love my Gore Windstopper. It’s probably been less cold down here but on Wednesday the combination of dampness, cold and wind made it pretty nasty. With my thermal glove inners under my winter gloves my fingers we’re still numb after just 3.5 miles. I didn’t think about it at the time, but my core and my arms were absolutely fine. The best thing about a decent windstopper is that you forget both that it’s there, and that you need it! Enjoy!!!
