Near Miss - Driver On The Phone
(n.b. this post is safe for Wife to read. I was in no danger during this incident, and merely witnessed the results)
Coming home from my long ride on Sunday, I chose the route over the top of Byker and down the Foss Way to Walker. This is a great road for tired legs - straight (it’s a Roman road), with a gentle downward gradient, and more often than not, a tailwind.
You can blast down here, pretty much keeping up with the traffic, but there’s also enough other stuff to keep you on your toes - some traffic-calming, quite a few side streets, a couple of mini roundabouts, and two traffic light controlled crossroads.
Anyway, it was while waiting second in line at one of these sets of lights that I saw several people cheat death, or at lease cheat the Gods of insurance policies, when a car came straight through the red light, up the Foss Way. There was a stream of traffic crossing the road, yet somehow, everyone swerved and braked in time to avoid so much as a scratch in the paintwork.
The driver who’d jumped the lights was still on the phone as she drove past me, though in fairness she looked pretty shaken up by the incident.
Oh, and one last thing for Yehuda Moon fans - she was driving a blue car .
