What Sort of Cyclist Am I?
I’ve never really fitted in. Either too far ahead of the curve, reveling in the newness of it all, or waaay behind - a laggard unable to fix something that ain’t broke just to keep up with the cool kids.
So it is with riding bikes. Am I a Cycle Chic proponent of the Slow Bicycle Movement . . . ?
. . . a fixed-wheel riding, wannabe hipster . . . ?
. . . a hardcore triathlete . . . ?
. . . a leader (pah! - a leader would have some followers! ) of the revolution against the automotive hegemony . . . ?
. . . maybe someone who likes riding with his friends . . .
. . . or a bloke who just loves to ride with his girls . . . ?
Or maybe I’m just someone who likes to ride a bike, and really doesn’t care what form that takes.
What sort of cyclist are you?

I am a still somewhat insecure cyclist because I think that I have to fit in a specific category and don’t.
It’s nice to complete the challenge. Big hillclimb this weekend and I didn’t get off once. I dont get to ride as much as I should or would like, but it makes me appreciate all the more the time I do get. For me its more about the ride and less about the bike, although that’s still important.
I’m an improper cyclist. Because I always seem to fail when encountering one of those ‘you’re not a proper cyclist unless you…’ statements.
Food for thought!
I’m a slow bicyclist when I’m riding with my wife. We just enjoy each other’s company, conversation, the scenery, flowers, etc.
When I ride with my friend, we also enjoy some conversation but I also like how we can challenge each other to go harder and steeper.
When I mountain bike, the pathfinding. line finding and being in the woods is what I like about it.
Nice to see some pictures of you Karl!
I’m a cyclist who’d like to ride slower. And faster.
I’d like to have more cycling kit. And I’d like to ride more in my normal clothes.
I’d like to do more long journeys by bike. And more short ones too.
Cycling is, I think, a journey - both literal and metaphorical. Perhaps we’re all still finding what kind of cyclist we are?
