I Have Ironman Legs
So most of the way home (sweaty, fly encrusted, and generally a bit of a mess), I got overtaken by someone on a nice new hybrid - skinny tyres, disk brakes, and Lycra shorts.
I was tempted to just let him go . . . but I’m just five week’s from race day, and starting to get a bit focused on targeting & reeling in competitors.
Within a few hundred yards, I’d caught up - still sitting upright and looking the part though. The other guy must have heard me, because he glanced over his shoulder & almost fell off his bike in surprise. I pulled alongside, ready for a chat. The other rider looked slightly alarmed - giving it 110% & dressed for "serious" cycling, and here he was with someone wearing a shirt & jeans apparently ambling past.
He dropped back, but pulled alongside when I stopped at a set of lights. We got talking (mostly about the gastronomic characteristics of different flies), and I revealed that I’m actually training for Ironman. With a dawning look of comprehension, he glanced down at my sensible commuting bike.
Like they say - It’s Not About The Bike!
