Fordern Sie die Straßen zurück (That’s German for “Reclaim The Streets”)
So how about this via Bike Portland ?
A 60km stretch of the Autobahn between Duisburg and Dortmund has been closed for a party. Over 20,000 tables were provided by the organisers to create the world’s longest banquet table.
This event was part of the Ruhr’s role as European Capital of Culture in 2010.
Local residents woke to the sound of birdsong rather than the roar of the Autobahn’s 100mph+ traffic. The event was so successful (according to the BBC ) that
At midday German media reported that the A40 temporarily had to be closed to cyclists due to traffic jams and overcrowding.
As Bike Portland says of the event,
Simply awesome. This event shows what’s possible when we re-imagine public space that is usually reserved only for private motor vehicles. No word yet whether some segments of the autobahn will be permanently renamed the peoplebahn.
