Are You A Boiled Frog?
I was thinking about the growth of traffic as I rode home last night. Chances are that if you’re over 40 (like me now!), you can remember riding in the ’70s.
There were cars on the roads in those days, but nothing like the volume of traffic there is today. And I’m sure (with my rose tinted glasses firmly in place) that drivers weren’t as impatient or in such a hurry to get everywhere.
Since then, things have changed - but only gradually. So as I’ve ridden, I’ve just become accustomed to the extra traffic - a bit like the story of the frog in the saucepan.
This urban legend (which isn’t true) says that if you toss a frog into a pan of boiling water, it’ll feel the heat and jump right out. On the other hand, if you put a frog in a pan of cool water, and gently increase the heat, it won’t notice. The frog will sit there happily until it gets boiled alive.
When I look at the traffic on the roads today, it sometimes makes me wonder why on earth anyone would choose to stop driving and start riding a bike instead - especially when you see drivers like this, filmed by YouTube user IDontPayRoadTax :
The question is - what has to change if we’re to reverse this situation?
