It’s Still Shorts & Fingerless Gloves Weather
But I don’t think for long. Actually, what I’m wearing is . . .
- Thermal base layer (long sleeved & fluorescent) with a short sleeved cycling jersey over the top. It looks like I have day-glo arm warmers - not so stylish, but it keeps me warm.
- Endura Humvee 3/4 length shorts with padded undershorts.
- Stuff on my extremities - helmet, those fingerless
gloves, socks & shoes.
On colder mornings it’s taking a mile or so to warm up, and sometimes my toes are a little chilly by the time I get to work. But other than that, it’s all still good - for now.
At what point do you figure out that it’s time to suit-up for winter riding?
Workout:
- Type: Cycle

- Calories: 1431
- Distance: 29 miles

I’m still clinging onto shorts, although I confess to using full gloves today for the first time this season. But then I am a soft southern Jessie!
Here in Germany they go by the calendar. Right after the first of September, everyone was covered head to toe in tights and long-sleeved jerseys. I got weird looks for still wearing shorts and a short-sleeved jersey.
It was down to +5C this morning, so it’s time to break out the arm and knee warmers. Below 0C it’ll be leg warmers and long-sleeved jerseys. Below -5C it’s tights and a light jacket. Below -10C it’s a quilted riding jacket with a thin lycra layer under the jersey and tights. That’s kept me quite warm down to -20C.
Full fingers year round, since I take detours through the forest and hate the branches across the knuckles.
I’ve been in gloves and the cap for a while now, other than that it’s mainly whatever I’m wearing anyway - except last winter our house was so cold I had to take a few layers off in order to get out on the bike.
