Bad Junction Design…

… this via David Hembrow, who explains some of what’s going on far better than I could:

It’s interesting as I spent some time today talking to one of our councillors about the importance of changing the built environment if we’re to change people’s behaviour. There’s a whole lot more to be said on this I think!

It just goes to show that it’s not the junction, not the car or bike, it’s the person in control of it: cyclist, driver, or pedestrian.

Like the clip. Won’t be riding in NYC any time soon.

No - I think it shows that with poor junction design, inadequate segregation, and a total failure to take account of human factors, people will do stupid things. The challenge in the design of systems and environments is to ensure that even the “less able” users (read: Darwin Award candidates) can still get a consistently good result.

Whilst I agree that the junction is not really helpful to pedestrians and cyclists surely the video shows how bad the behaviour of those using it is!
