Collecting Stuff By Bike
We live by the sea, which can be very hard on anything you leave outside. After nearly 13 years in this house, the front gate’s post and latch finally gave up the fight, and needed replacing.
Reasoning that most things can be done by bike, I went to F.E. Maughan’s, the hardware store in Whitley Bay. They charged less than B&Q, and were kind enough to saw an 8ft fence post in half for me. They also taped the two pieces together for “easy” carrying on the bike’s rack:
I was a little nervous riding through town like this - I often mis-judge a bike’s width in traffic, and have sometimes ended up rubbing the pannier bags against a car bumper. So I was super-cautious, and rode pretty much in the middle of the lane. Strangely enough, drivers didn’t seem to mind this, and gave me a lot of room when passing!
Oh, and in case you were wondering, this is what I did when I got home:
If you live in the ‘county’ roads of Harrow, the top of these posts will probably look familiar to you:
Before we lived in Whitley Bay, we were in Harrow, where all the front gardens’ original fence posts were finished in this design.

I love the top of the gate posts - obviously designed to resist water penetration.
