Meh! I need a new challenge. Couple of weeks back, I saw that someone hereabouts had posted about a 100 push-ups challenge. Being as I’m on the thin and weedy side of things above the waist, rather like the ‘before’ picture in the Charles Atlas adverts, I’ve never been able to do push ups (or […]

This caught my eye on Liz Fedofsky’s blog this evening:
…. And then the frozen peas were passed around. One thing I keep learning from other athletes is how much time the care of the body takes. Sometimes I think I’m the only one that spends half her day with a ball crammed into her calf […]

I missed the NE31 club’s swim session last night, so to make up for it, I went to Tynemouth pool this morning for a longer swim. I set my watch’s countdown timer to 1′13″ to give me a nice easy pace for each 50m (two lengths), and set off aiming for consistency.
It kinda worked - […]

I’ve just got back from a really disappointing pool session. And I’m not at all happy. Not happy at all. Grrrrrr!
It’s the last Monday of the month, so that means a 400m time trial at the NE31’s swim session. After last Friday’s performance in the pool (2:30 / 100m pace over 1,000m), which was taking […]

After the freezing cold easterly wind of the last week, the weather changed last night, and it became almost warm. I’d noticed the difference in temperature as soon as we came out of the pool, so this morning’s run was sure to be pleasant.
The sun was shining, there was no wind to speak of, and […]

Tomorrow is the North Tyneside 10k - from North Shields to the Lighthouse. It’ll be the fourth year for this race, and I’ve done ‘em all so far. It’s a great event that goes right past my front door, so I get ‘home team’ advantage, with a huge crowd to cheer me on.
And I think […]

I remember when I was a student at Loughborough (famous for sports and engineering geeks - I was in the latter group, though Steve Backley was in my Hall in the year above me), looking out at the field behind my room, and watching a guy doing sprints. He had a rope round his waist, […]

I hit my mileage target for last year at the start of December. And just like the mis-quoted Tom Simpson, I didn’t utter the words, “Put me back on my bike”. Nope, far from it. In fact, in the last three months, I’ve only cycled about 250 miles. I’m sure I remember reading in Lance’s […]

Remember the ‘R’ in SMART goals? You have to set yourself targets that are realistic - bearing in mind your other commitments. Well there are all sorts of holidays & visits to my folks (in Kent - the other end of the UK), and Wife’s folks in France (2,000 mile round trip by car) to […]

It’s that time of year again, when planning the next season takes hold. Actually, last month might have been that time of year, but better late than never.
This year, I’m trying to stick to the Good Advice in Joe Friel’s Triathlete’s Training Bible (which is also available in the USA!).
And to that end, I’ve put […]
