By and large, cycle infrastructure in the UK is a mess.
It’s not joined-up, doesn’t go where you need to get to, and always, always seems to play second fiddle to roads for motor vehicles or footpaths for pedestrians. Many local authorities do things that could only charitably be seen as making any effort, yet...

After finding out about Daisy’s brakes in the rain, I wasn’t too keen at all on collecting Daughter from her stage class on the Tandem. So I thought I’d kill two birds with one stone, and run home with her. That way, we wouldn’t be driving (not that we can this weekend), AND she’d...

I’ve got to admit that I’ve had my mind changed over the last few months about cycle paths. It’s been through a combination of “Look how good it is on a broad, flat surface without any cars” articles from David Hembrow, Marc at Amsterdamize, and Mikael at Copenhagenize / Copenhagen Cycle Chic.
Its also been...

I really like to ride my bike. I’ve always liked to ride. But it’s only over the last couple of years that I’ve been using it as my main mode of transport locally. The numbers speak for themselves:
From when I was eleven, I did something like 500 miles between 1981 and 1985 on my...

Well, car manufacturers don’t seem to be having a good time of it right now, do they (”Hey, Congressman, buddy, can you spare $35bn?”). This might seem good for the environment - after all, transportation accounts for a boatload of our carbon emissions, so fewer cars means less of that going up into the...

So I posted earlier about how these two guys have done over 100,000 bike miles, and how although this is a long way (a very long way), it’s actually quite conceivable to accumulate that sort of mileage through your regular life.
Well, here’s an example of what I mean, taken from last Saturday:
08:45 - meeting...

So there are a bunch of people doing amazing stuff today - Brad & Big Dave & a few others from sweat365.com are doing the Steelman Triathlon somewhere in and around Las Vegas. 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, and then a full marathon.
Any race with those kinds of distances is tough, but for...

Meh! I need a new challenge. Couple of weeks back, I saw that someone hereabouts had posted about a 100 push-ups challenge. Being as I’m on the thin and weedy side of things above the waist, rather like the ‘before’ picture in the Charles Atlas adverts, I’ve never been able to do push ups...

This caught my eye on Liz Fedofsky’s blog this evening:
…. And then the frozen peas were passed around. One thing I keep learning from other athletes is how much time the care of the body takes. Sometimes I think I’m the only one that spends half her day with a ball crammed into her...

I missed the NE31 club’s swim session last night, so to make up for it, I went to Tynemouth pool this morning for a longer swim. I set my watch’s countdown timer to 1′13″ to give me a nice easy pace for each 50m (two lengths), and set off aiming for consistency.
It kinda worked...
