I was looking for a photo of a bike wheel for tonight’s discussion at the Darlington Cycling Campaign , but instead I came up with this in Flickr’s Creative Commons images:
This is probably why you should never lend your bike to a mechanical engineering student with too much time on his hands.
Anyway, I’m sure [...]

Pedestrian refuges / traffic islands - put there for your safety. On the one hand, they mean that pedestrians can cross roads one lane at a time. And drivers, get a greater perception of their speed, which hopefully means that they slow down.
The trouble is, that there isn’t always room for a car AND a [...]

YOU KNOW WHEN YOU’VE HAD A PARTICULARLY CLOSE CALL WITH A CAR / BUS / LORRY / WHATEVER, WHEN YOU LOOK ACROSS AND REALISE THAT THE GUY CYCLING NEXT TO YOU SEEMS TO HAVE LOST TOO MUCH WEIGHT, IS CARRYING A SCYTHE, AND HAS EYES LIKE STARLIGHT GLITTERING ACROSS ETERNITY:
SO FOR TODAY’S CAPTION CONTEST, [...]

Not sure if you’ve seen this postcard - I think it’s from Sustrans:
Anyway, this was confirmed last week with this video that I found on Imagine No Cars :
Eeek! Yes, that is a man, that is a beard, and those are moobs.
Mind you, it might not be cycling that shrinks underwear - it could [...]

Remember that whole thing that the strong should bow to the weak in transport? So cars give way to bikes, who in turn give way to pedestrians?
Well, as you can see, it was alive and well in Whitley Bay last week:
Oh, hang on a minute, I’ve got that wrong haven’t I? It’s just another [...]

We normally do our caption contest on Fridays, but today is the 8th March - International Woman’s Day.
The bicycle is indeed a true freedom machine. It enables us to go places that are just too far to walk, without the need to be in a silly metal box for transportation. If you were a woman [...]

This week I’ve had a good trawl through the Creative Commons images of bicycles on Flickr. I was going to treat you to a juxtaposition of the fashion industry’s view of bikes, and what I think it is that we the people would want to see. But then I came across this photo by sanctumsolitude [...]

Bikeportland.org yesterday featured a map showing their local accident blackspots for cyclists:
What you’ll notice from this is that accidents seem to happen more on busier streets, and most frequently at junctions. (In other news, the sky is apparently blue, grass green, and dogs found to bark).
You can see this even more clearly on this [...]

Yep. And then we can put all this silliness behind us.
On the plus side, despite its best efforts to rain or snow on me, all I got while I was out were a few stray snowflakes. Is this actually my first dry ride of the year?

Bah. Howling gale from the North East. Raining cats & dogs. And just above freezing.
The wind was such that the full set of waterproofs I was wearing gave up the fight within just over a mile. And after that there was another twelve miles of soaking slog. Highlights included my Sealskinz GoreTex socks [...]
