Great run this evening on a new route - into Newcastle and back:
And I got to stop briefly at Carlton Reid’s cocktail bar half way round too. Unfortunately they were right out of Bambino Splash (pint glass - half fill with snakebite, and top up with snowball), but they did have water for...

It’s MAY, but for my run yesterday evening, I had to wear a long-sleeved top to keep warm, and think that I really should have been wearing some leggings too. The wind was from the South, but it was FREEZING. Taking Huge Dalmatian for a walk after, I even had to pull on an...

So my Decadent In-laws are here to stay and it’s the school holidays. Normally I’d do my long ride on a Sunday, but we’d hatched a plan for a picnic on Holy Island - the family would drive, and I’d cycle there before hitching a lift home.
I plotted my route . . .

So here’s the thing:
You check the weather forecast before setting off for the ride to the station.
It says there’ll be a light tailwind, scattered clouds, but basically sunny.
You look outside, and there is lots of blue sky.
You know what comes next, don’t you?
As soon as you get far enough from home that you don’t...

This is my last active week in my Base 2 training period - next week (oh joy!) is recovery week, where I shall be lounging around, drinking piña coladas and notching up a mere 6.5 hours of training.
To celebrate, I opted to do a brick session - bike followed immediately by a run.
The bike...

Spring is just around the corner - I managed to ride both to and from work in daylight. In fact, I probably didn’t need my lights on for either journey. But then again, I was riding through Blyth - a town where it is apparently compulsory for all van drivers to have a phone...

Yep. And then we can put all this silliness behind us.
On the plus side, despite its best efforts to rain or snow on me, all I got while I was out were a few stray snowflakes. Is this actually my first dry ride of the year?

Bah. Howling gale from the North East. Raining cats & dogs. And just above freezing.
The wind was such that the full set of waterproofs I was wearing gave up the fight within just over a mile. And after that there was another twelve miles of soaking slog. Highlights included my Sealskinz GoreTex...

Did I get your attention with that title?
OK, so there’s a lot of rubbish written about cycling - stuff about how all cyclists jump red lights, how it’s really, really dangerous, and if you believe the Daily Mail amongst others , it’s a sure-fire route to erectile dysfunction and significantly reduced sperm count. Apparently,
…competitors...

Why do I do it to myself? At least the ice and snow encrusting my nether regions had melted before I went for my cool-down run. Not that I could have been any cooler.
Just out of interest, does anyone know when this winter’s going to end?
